stars

A gentle breeze against my cheeks
During the twilight hours of summer
The dry earth beneath me still warm
Yearning for coolness in the night

In the fading light of the evening sun
Familiar twinkles dot the sky
In every direction upon the moonless evening
I see stories from eternity unfolding

My vision flooded by appreciation
The insignificance of my life reflected
Grounding my ambition, hoping against hope
To find meaning amongst the cosmic layers

Across the clear skies now dark
I join the company of my ancestors
Who often wondered about these lights
The purpose they played, upon our lives

For a while, as I stare
Lying upon the grassy plains
There is not one other in sight
It is just myself and the night

They say the stars are where they are
For partaking in the performance of life
Like clockwork do they weave through the nights
Hazy patterns that foretell our plight

The chasm of the cosmos does not hold sway
Over many a mind today
Being closer to nature is an afterthought
Holiday cheers, then back to life

We as beings perceive in our minds
The extensions of our senses
Deceived by the very things
That enable our existence

I stand and look around me
The lights of civilization are pretty
Pulling me out of my contemplative reverie
Optimism prevails over jagged society.
